Choosing the right person for the job is never easy, but it’s incredibly important that you make the right choice when it comes to entrusting someone to take care of your roof. Here are seven tips to help steer you towards finding the best roofing services partner:
Don’t make a hasty decision
We understand that sometimes you really do need a quick turnaround. If a storm blows through and does significant damage to your roof, you obviously want to be able to choose a roofing contractor fairly quickly. In those times, though, don’t just go with the first contractor you can find. Furthermore, you should certainly be wary of any “storm chaser” contractor who comes around knocking on doors after a storm passes. It’s worth your while to do a little homework before you risk making a bad decision.
Don’t keep putting off your decision, either
Many home and business owners whose roof situation isn’t yet dire actually tend to land on the other end of the spectrum. Not only do they avoid making a hasty decision, they try to avoid making any decision at all! Procrastinating and putting off giving your roof the attention it needs will only make things worse in the long run; roofs don’t repair themselves! If you wait too long, you could end up in a roof-critical situation that then forces you into making a hastier decision than you would like.
Start by choosing local
Just because a contractor is willing to do some work in your area does not make them local. For example, “storm chaser” contractors come out of the woodwork after a hurricane impact, and then fade back out of sight as quickly as they appeared. You really don’t want to go with a company who isn’t going to be there for you whenever you might need them again down the road. A company who is locally headquartered in your region is much better equipped to provide a roof that is best-suited for your local weather and climate conditions. It’s also much safer to trust an established roofing provider that doesn’t just work in your community, but also lives here and actively contributes to the community, as well.
Ask people you trust for referrals
What’s the best way to find out whether a product or service is all that it’s advertised to be? Talk to someone you know who’s actually used it! If you have a friend, family member, or coworker who’s recently had some roof work done, ask them about their experience. Obviously, you’ll want to learn about the quality of roof materials used and the level of expert workmanship demonstrated, but don’t limit yourself to questions just about the job itself. While you’re asking, find out about how well the contractor communicated with your friend (or family member, or coworker) throughout the process, and what rating they’d give the contractor for personalized customer service. Also ask about the free roof inspection and consultation that was provided initially (if the contractor did so), and about what financing options the contractor made available, if any. Asking questions like these is a wise, sound method for narrowing your pool of potential roofing providers.
Check online reviews
In this modern, internet-driven society in which we live, we probably don’t have to tell you to “Google it” … we already know you’re going to! If you don’t happen to have a personal network of folks who can help you with referrals to a local roofing contractor, the internet really can be a powerful resource to check for customer reviews and testimonials. Reviews shared on the company’s website can be helpful to consider, as are reviews on social media and on sites like Angie’s List that exist to help rate local service providers. By all means, check their BBB score and reviews as well. It’s generally wise to stay away from contractors who have a low score, and it’s also a good idea to steer clear of contractors who have no BBB presence whatsoever.
Safety, liability, and responsibility
It might not always get talked about, but safety matters too. A roofing contractor that doesn’t have a safety training program (or any ongoing skills training, for that matter) is probably not going to be your safest choice. And what kind of licensure and insurance coverages do they maintain, if any?
Simply due to the nature of the work, roofing insurance can be very expensive, and many roofing contractors simply don’t budget for it. But when it comes to the safety of their workers (which directly correlates to the quality of workmanship applied to your roof), you don’t want your roofing company cutting any corners. If the company in question doesn’t take good care of its installers, then they probably won’t take the best care of your roof, either.
Base your decision on more than just price
Funny that we saved price considerations for last, considering that it’s probably one of the first questions people tend to ask when shopping for … well … pretty much anything! It’s really not about having the lowest price, so much as it’s about having the best price.
You see, many contractors will try and wave what looks like a low price, but it may not include what you want and need in terms of quality roofing materials, workmanship, service, and customer experience. Sometimes a cheaper roof is really just … cheap. Making the wrong choice of a roofing provider isn’t worth the potential headache and hassle, and it certainly isn’t worth the risk of ending up with a bad long-term roof investment.
