Synthetic Roofing Is Now Squarely on Everyone’s Radar

We’ve been getting a lot more questions about synthetic roofing lately at Skywalker Roofing, so we wanted to take this opportunity to educate you about what synthetic roofing is, and why it’s proving to be a very good roofing material solution. One application of synthetic roofing that’s become increasingly popular is using synthetic slate tiles in place of real slate. The cost to install and maintain slate roofs has gotten to the point where most homeowners simply can’t afford them. And while synthetic roofing isn’t cheap, it can be indeed more affordable to install and maintain than either natural slate tiles or real cedar shakes.

What’s the Difference Between Synthetic Roofing and Composite Roofing?

That’s a good question, because the two terms are often confused. The term composite typically refers to a combination of things. Composite can honestly be used to describe any combination of wood, vinyl, fiber cement, or any number of recycled materials. Composites are used in the production of all sorts of construction materials, including roofing products. Composite roofing is often made with recycled rubbers and plastics, and there are plenty of these products around.

But more recently, some true synthetic roofing products have come onto the market.
The synthetic roofing manufacturing and design process is a different approach altogether, and shows some distinct advantages. For example, DaVinci Roofscapes uses pure, virgin polymer resins to create some roofing products that are amazingly good-looking, resilient, and require essentially no maintenance.

Things to Like About Synthetic Roofing

Natural slate and cedar both look fantastic, but each of these materials has its own drawbacks, too. Thanks to modern synthetic materials like DaVinci roofing, you now have a better roofing solution available. DaVinci markets its products as doing a remarkably good job of living up to the look of nature, while delivering greater performance capabilities with less needed maintenance. From our experience working with these synthetic products first-hand at Skywalker Roofing, we’ve become believers! And other roofers we know in the industry are equally impressed.

Here are some things you should know about synthetic roofing:

⇒ It Really Does Look Good

Synthetic roofing is modeled after actual slate and real wood shakes, and the results are pretty impressive. DaVinci products in particular display a natural-looking, non-repeating pattern that’s beautiful to behold. It’s honestly hard to tell that these aren’t real slate tiles, or real cedar wood shakes.

⇒ These Colors Don’t Fade

The best synthetic roof tiles and roof shakes are made from pure virgin resins that are then fortified with effective UV stabilizers. What does that mean in terms of color retention? Basically, it means that whatever color you choose for your installation is the color you’ll get to keep for many decades to come!

⇒ More Durable Than “Natural” Products, with Less Needed Maintenance

Rotting, cracking, and curling are ever-present concerns with wood shakes. And while natural slate is naturally durable, it can still be degraded by weathering. A well-made, well-installed synthetic roof offers reliable, low-maintenance durability that’s engineered to last a lifetime.

⇒ Impressive Wind Resistance

Some roofing manufacturers will tell you their materials are wind-resistant, but they don’t back that up with any real data. Synthetic roofing from DaVinci is engineered to endure the equivalent of a Cat 5 hurricane wind burst, and can withstand sustained winds of 110 mph. We can tell you, there aren’t many roofing materials that can match that level of performance!

⇒ Solid Fire Protection

There’s really no such thing as a fireproof roof – but synthetic roofing from DaVinci honestly comes pretty close. It carries a Class A fire rating, which means it’s least likely to ignite in the event of a fire threat. If fire protection is a primary concern for you, then synthetic roofing is certainly a good option.

⇒ Better Impact Protection Than Comparable Roofing Materials

It might surprise you to learn that synthetic roofing is actually more impact resistant than other roofing materials, including metal and concrete. Synthetics aren’t brittle, and carry a Class 4 impact rating, which is higher than that of asphalt, natural slate, natural shakes, concrete, and metal.

⇒ Exceptional Product Warranty

Some roofing product manufacturer warranties try to come off as sounding good, but synthetic roofing warranties really are good. For instance, DaVinci synthetic roofing comes with a lifetime warranty that’s good for up to 50 years!
