Spring is Just Around the Corner!

March is upon us, which means that spring is almost here. Spring is a time for Easter, warmer temperatures, new growth, green grass, and flowers. If you’re an allergy sufferer, spring is also the start of pollen season – but let’s not dwell too much on that. You know what else people usually associate with spring? Spring cleaning!

At our house, spring cleaning usually involves changing the seasonal decorations, doing some decluttering and reorganizing, and performing some deeper cleaning of areas that typically only tend to get touched a few times a year. Can you relate? I bet you know what I’m talking about!

When it Comes to Spring Cleaning, Don’t Forget About the Roof Over Your Head!

Some of you may now be asking, “My roof? What’s that got to do with spring cleaning? Didn’t I just take care of my gutters in the fall?”

Well, hopefully you did. But if you didn’t wait until the very end of leaf season, you may have accumulated some more leaves in your gutter since then. Don’t forget that there are also tree species in the Southeast (like the stubborn oaks around my yard) that don’t shed all of their leaves in the fall. Some trees tend to hold onto those old leaves right up until the new ones spring forth to take their place, in fact.

And don’t forget about the impacts of winter, either. Snows and ice storms can drop branches and other debris on your roof. Spring is actually a very appropriate time to check out your roof’s condition and perform a little routine maintenance.

A Spring Cleaning Checklist for Your Roof

Assuming you’re comfortable navigating a ladder, showing your roof a little TLC in the spring can pay some real dividends down the road. There’s really never a bad time to give your gutters a once-over, and the more you stay on top of keeping them clear, the easier the job will be. Plus, the earlier you can detect any issues that may need addressing with your roof, the better! Here are a few items you should have on your spring roof cleaning checklist:

  • Do a Little Pruning

It’s important to make sure that no nearby tree branches are endangering your roof. Consider pruning any branches that overhang your roof, or that are in close proximity to your house. Not only will this help to protect your roof, but it will also eliminate some of the leaves that could otherwise make their way into your gutters come fall. Trees tend to respond well to pruning in the spring, and it’s actually healthy for the trees to cut away their dead spots.

  • Give Your Gutters a Quick Cleaning

Even if you DID clean your gutters in the fall, it’s amazing to see what can still make its way into your gutters over the course of winter, including any shingle granules that may have gotten knocked off by winter snows and ice melt. Better to start the warmer months with gutters that are primed and ready for directing off the flow of water from the coming spring and summer downpours.

  • Check Your Shingles (or Other Roofing Material)

Speaking of granule loss, if your shingles have shed an excessive amount of granules, their ability to protect your roof may be compromised. If you have a shingle roof, you’ll also want to check for any shingles that may be warped, damaged, loose, or missing. If your roof is covered with a different type of material, now is still a good time to assess its overall condition.

  • Check the Seals & Flashing, Too

When you’re assessing your roof, be sure to look for broken seals at any connection points, as well as around the flashing. Look at the flashing itself, too. Most flashing is made of either aluminum, galvanized steel, or copper. Metal flashing can get eroded, rusted, or worn out over time due to long-term weather effects. Plus, if you happen to notice any exposed underlayment or decking, it’s definitely time to take some action.

  • Don’t Forget the Attic

It’s also a good idea to look at your roof from a different angle – that is to say, from underneath. You want to ensure that everything looks and feels dry in your attic. If you notice any obvious water damage or water stains, you likely have a roof issue that needs addressing. If you don’t detect any obvious damage, but do find mold or mildew, that’s also a good indication that unwanted moisture is finding its way in somewhere. And while you’re in the attic, be sure to look up. If you happen to see any springtime sun peeking through, then that means you have a gap in your roof that will need some attention.

For Greater Peace of Mind, Schedule a Professional Roof Inspection

Doing a regular self-check of your roof and performing a little needed maintenance is certainly a wise practice to follow. But unless you’ve had specialized training and experience, you could still miss something. YouTube is great for a lot of DIY projects, but YouTube can’t inspect your roof for you, no matter how many times you replay that video! If you really want to get a good handle on what’s going with your roof, then it’s best to leave that task to a locally licensed-and-insured roofing professional.
