2022 Metal pricing and materials supply update

We’ve been helping you track the changes in metal roofing supply costs since the pandemic began, and today we wanted to give you an update on the metal materials cost situation and what effect that may have on metal roofing costs for the rest of 2022.

No doubt you’re aware that construction material prices have risen quite a bit since 2020. During the first quarter of 2022, we finally saw prices start to come down a bit, but that all changed with the Russian invasion of Ukraine and with continuing high fuel prices and inflation rates.

So, where do things stand now with metal prices and metal roofing costs? Thankfully, the prices of metal have been trending down month-to-month during Q2 and Q3. That’s a good thing! But at the same time, we’re now experiencing a shortage of PVDF paint, which is the preferred covering for metal roofing panels. The drop in supply combined with high demand means that PVDF paint prices have actually increased. And production prices are still quite high, thanks to the high cost of labor and continued high fuel costs.

Keeping all of these factors in mind, the cost of painted steel has dropped slightly, but not really enough to trickle down to end users and consumers.

So, what will it cost me to get a metal roof installation now?

That’s the $64 question, and there’s still honestly not a simple answer. A lot of that will depend upon the particular measurements of your roof and upon which materials and installation style you choose. Standing seam roofs provide much better protection, but they’re also more expensive than corrugated metal roof approaches.

All that being said, metal roofing prices aren’t projected to drop significantly anytime soon. In fact, many industry experts expect that the cost of metal roofing will only increase over time going forward, no matter what happens with any particular material pricing trends.

What would it cost me NOT to move forward with a needed roof replacement?

That’s honestly a better question to be asking yourself right now. What would it cost you not to go ahead and spend the money required to replace your roof now?

Granted, a standing seam metal roof is more expensive than, say, an asphalt shingle roof. At the same time, custom metal roofing will last you MUCH longer. You’ll probably need to replace a shingle roof at least once or twice before a standing seam metal roof ever comes close to needing replacement. So, spending a little more upfront can actually save you money in the long run.

And let’s be honest. The roof you have overhead is honestly one of the most important investments you can make for your home or business. It’s a crucial line of defense against rain, wind, snow, and other weather threats. If the roof you have now is no longer doing its job properly, then the cost of putting off a needed roof replacement could end up being much higher than going ahead and taking action now!

When it comes to choosing a roof replacement, cheaper isn’t always better.

All cost variables aside, you honestly don’t want to put a cheap roof over your home or business in the first place. When it comes to protecting your people and your possessions, it’s just not worth it to risk it by cutting corners or taking chances. Better to have the job done right the first time, so you won’t have to come back and think about roof replacement again anytime soon.

Perhaps one of our satisfied customers put it best when they had this to say about choosing to partner with Skywalker Roofing:

“I am way too poor to buy cheap. I can’t afford to do this twice, so I need this roof replacement done right the first time!”

A new roof isn’t cheap, but it absolutely can be affordable
