Flipping the Roof on Roofing Needs in the Community
In December of 2024, Carroll Dornhecker Jr. faced another tough winter with a damaged roof and tight finances that made replacement virtually impossible. This 6-year Army veteran knew things were dire, but with a fixed income and limited wiggle room, there wasn’t much that could be done but let his roof fall into disrepair.
But thanks to a coordinated effort between Skywalker Roofing, The Owens Corning Roof Deployment Project, and Purple Heart Homes, this veteran was able to put his roofing woes behind him and enjoy a little security over the holidays.
Skywalker Roofing is proud to be a part of this monumental effort for our community and our veterans. Through this partnership, we’ve helped install more than 10 roofs so far and are giving people like Mr. Dornhecker peace of mind in times of need.
The No Roof Left Behind Program
Every year, Skywalker Roofing chooses a county and invites residents to nominate a person they believe deserves a free roof. These nominations are taken over a month, and a list is narrowed down to a handful of individuals. The community is then invited to vote on a finalist. This finalist, once chosen, will receive a full roof replacement that covers all costs related to the build. Parts. Labor. Accessories. Everything.
We don’t stop at the basics! In some of our recent NRLB builds, we’ve installed Weather lock Mats, ProArmor roof underlayment, Vent Sure vents, and Tru Definition shingles for added protection and security from the weather. The NRLB program is made possible by our partnership with Owens Corning, which provides us with premium components and gives us the power to assist those in need.
Skywalker’s Got You Covered in More Ways Than One
“I can’t really afford to pay 5-6- seven thousand dollars to have a new roof put on our house,” Dornhecker shared with Skywalker, a sentiment many in North Carolina and surrounding states can relate to. Finding the money to get by month-to-month can be hard enough, and tucking away funds for a literal ‘rainy day’ can be next to impossible when working with limited resources.
But at Skywalker, we believe we can change the landscape of our community just like we do roofs– with hard work, determination, and service in our hearts. Thanks to our partnership with Owens Corning and Purple Heart Homes, we replaced Mr. Dornhecker’s roof and are ready to keep the momentum going in your neck of the woods.
The Replacement Process
When Skywalker assessed Mr. Dornhecker’s roof, it was clear that it had seen better days. The old roof was plagued by missing shingles and structural issues and could no longer protect the structure– or the family beneath it.
Our first step was to remove damaged roofing materials and strip everything down to the underlying structure. From there, we installed ProArmor underlayment and began placing durable Owens Corning shingles along the roof’s surface. We finished off the job by sealing the vents and flashing to keep everything watertight and ready for the season’s worst.
